How to Avoid the Harmful Effects of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Are you worried about Carbon Monoxide poisoning?
With recent media attention, many feel great concern. We would never bring something knowingly dangerous into our home which could risk the health of ourselves and that of our family. However, having a gas boiler that isn’t regularly checked and maintained is potentially DANGEROUS!
When a boiler doesn’t burn gas correctly, it produces higher concentrations of carbon-monoxide which is toxic. We are all to familiar with the harmful health consequences that this can bring. It is estimated that one death a week is a result of poorly maintained boilers and gas appliances. That equates to an approximate 52 individuals each year! In addition, an estimated 200 are left seriously ill from the side effects.
Signs of carbon monoxide poisoning to look out for;
- dizziness and nausea
- tiredness and confusion
- stomach pain
- shortness of breath and difficulty breathing
Having your boiler annually checked will vastly reduce the chance of this happening to you. When a service is carried out, the engineer will be able to check the health of your boiler and provide the maintenance that it requires. IT IS VITAL TO NOTE THAT A SERVICE CAN ONLY BE CARRIED OUT BY A GAS SAFE ENGINEER.
The following symptoms indicate that your gas boiler needs to be inspected:
- An irregular or yellow boiler flame.
- Stains or smoke marks appearing on or near the appliance.
- Unstable pressure on the heating circuit, i.e. high/low pressure.
- The boiler pilot light goes out repeatedly.
